Amenities/area:
Situated some 60 kilometers north of Alicante, Altea lies alongside the
estuary of the River Algar where it meets the sea. It is incredibly fortunate
in that it is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, dominated
by the magnificent outline of the Sierra bernia mountain range. The lower
southern slopes are covered with vast tracts of pine forest gradually descending
into gently undulating countryside, large fertile areas ,which are still
devoted to the production of all manner of semitropical fruit and vegetables.
In complete contrast, is the rocky indented coastline that prevails here
and also provides some splendid scenery with views that extend southwards
for beyond the bay of Albir.
Many aspects of the old town of Altea are reminiscent of an age long past
when the Moors influence over this coveted area of the Mediterranean was
at its peak. Winding narrow streets of tall whitewashed houses rise steeply
to a focal point, high above, culminating in the discovery of an impressive
church with mosque like, blue tiled dome, visible for miles around. By its
side there is a cobbled square flanked with a number of cafes with chairs
and tables outdoors.
However Altea has more to offer than its rich historical and cultural links.
Down by the waterfront and harbour there is plenty of life to be found;
cafes, bars and restaurants are in abundance and the local fishermen are
rather well known for their seemingly never ending catches of lobster. Once
a week, the open market is held which stretches almost the full length of
the quayside where it is possible to buy an enormous variety of handcrafted
goods. Nearby is the chic and stylish Campomanes Marina, a purpose-built
pleasure harbour with mooring points and ancillary services for over 500
boats. There are also plenty of other facilities on hand of interest even
to the non-nautically inclined; fashionable boutiques, informal bars and
smart restaurants. Windsurfing enthusiasts can sail from a pebble beach
nearby. The beach extends for a long distance both to the north and the
south, interspersed by rocky coves, some of which are only accessible by
boat.
Golfing enthusiasts will be rewarded with the challenge of the Don Cayo
course, which covers acres of landscaped lush vegetation resplendent with
Jacaranda trees, amidst well maintained and verdant greens. The Clubhouse
looks over the course to the sea beyond.
With an average annual sunshine rate of 320 days a year this magical corner
of the Costa Blanca attracts a very cosmopolitan population both resident
and visiting. It is particularly attractive to the English, especially during
the winter months, when the sunshine brings a wry smirk to their faces as
they watch the English weather report. Even at Christmas, lunch may be taken
on the terrace wearing only t shirt and shorts even though the mornings
and evenings can be quite cool.
